Bebop Wednesdays presents

The Kade Brown Trio

Kade Brown is one of Melbourne’s most sought after pianists and has performed with many of Australia’s fine jazz musicians since moving from the south coast of NSW in 2014. This quartet brings together saxophonist Julien Wilson, bassist Ben Hanlon and drummer Al Kennedy, playing a selection of their favourite swinging jazz tunes from the 50s and 60s from American jazz greats Thelonious Monk, Dexter Gordon and Wayne Shorter, as well as some music from Australian jazz luminaries Bernie McGann and Alastair Spence. Expect deep grooves, textures and soaring melodies, delivered with the atmosphere of contemporary jazz and the intensity of 60s post-bop.

James Macaulay/ Eugene Ball/ Scott McConnachie/ Fran Swinn/ Sam Bates

Briefly visiting Melbourne from his new home in Japan, we are very excited to host his Quintet playing music recently composed for performance in Tokyo featuring Eugene Ball.

James is a trombonist working predominately in the jazz and improvised music scenes in Melbourne. He is a member of the Eugene Ball Quartet, the Aaron Choulai Quintet, the Lagerphones and Freudian Sleep as well as leading his own bands.

“James is an outstanding trombone player, one of the best in the country. Considering the strength of the brass scene here this puts him in the ‘world class’ category – an extraordinary achievement for someone of his age.” – Peter Knight

“James is considered by many to be the most significant and innovative young trombone players in Australia, and I certainly support this view. James’ approach is rare in that it boldly displays intelligence and ferocious command of the instrument whilst remaining warm and lyrical. James is also one of the few emerging musicians with a genuine passion and respect for the historical legacy of the jazz in Australia. Above all, James is vehemently dedicated to personal and musical excellence.” – Eugene Ball

The Stephen Magnusson Trio

One of the world's leading improvised music guitar players

Guitarist and composer Stephen Magnusson is a musician at the height of his powers. From the precocious virtuoso who dazzled the music world when he crashed onto the scene, to a musician so mature, complete and respected that when people talk of an “Australian sound” of instrumental music, it is Magnusson’s influence – his tone, his touch, his compositional watermark and his deep sensitivity – that they hear.

founding member of SNAG, FESTA, Assumptions Trio (Julien Wilson and Will Guthrie) Julio and The Stevies (again with Julien and also Stephen Grant), his trio MAG (Frank DiSario and Dave Beck) and the latest quartet – Magnet (Carl Pannuzzo, Eugene Ball and Sergio Beresovsky) Steve is one of the most vital, musical and leading exponents in this music. Plus he's a sweetheart....

featuring everything from hard swinging Ornette Coleman tunes to delicate originals and distinctive ballads, sometimes even a cover of a Cold Chisel or The Police, Steve captivates and meserises with his incredible musicianship and openness....
